Activists protest release of Ivory Kingpin Feisal Mohammed on Sh10m bond

A group of animal activists on Monday took to the streets protesting the release of suspected ivory smuggler Feisal Mohammed.

The activists gathered outside the Supreme Court in Nairobi carrying placards written "Jail not Bail" and "The world is watching while Elephants are dying".

They demonstrated against a Mombasa court's decision on Friday to release Feisal, a Kenyan, on a Sh10 million bond.

Feisal was released after eight months in custody for dealing and being in possession of 314 pieces of elephant tusks weighing 2,152kg.

He is suspected to be the ring-leader of an ivory smuggling gang and is listed by Interpol as one of the nine most wanted environmental crime fugitives worldwide.

Senior principal magistrate Davis Karani said the circumstances have changed and found it reasonable to release Feisal.

He said the prosecution asked for more time to gather information, thus interfering with faster conclusion of the case.

In March, Feisal was granted bond by another magistrate but the DPP successfully challenged it at the High Court.

His lawyers had asked the court to grant their client bail to seek medical attention, but Assistant DPP Alexander Muteti said Mohamed’s health condition was "not so bad” to warrant a release.
