Ivory 'kingpin' Feisal Mohamed released on Sh10 million bond

Suspected ivory kingpin Feisal Mohamed has been released on Sh10 million bond by a Mombasa court after eight months in custody.

Senior principal magistrate Davis Karani said the circumstances have changed and found it reasonable to release Mohamed.

He said the prosecution asked for more time to gather information on the case, thus interfering with faster conclusion of the case.

Karani said evidence produced by an officer from the registrar of persons department confirmed Mohamed is Kenyan.

“I have given the DPP seven days to gather all the evidence they need in the case and find it right to release the accused person on bond,” he said.

In March, Mohamed was granted bond by another magistrate but the DPP successfully challenged it at the High Court.

Mohamed is being represented by lawyers Gikandi Ngibuini, Jared Magolo, Michael Oloo and Pascal Nabwana.

The lawyers asked the court to grant their client bail since he needs to seek medical attention.

Assistant DPP Alexander Muteti said Mohamed’s health condition “is not so bad”to warrant his release.

Furthermore, he said the Shimo la Tewa Prison has adequate health facilities.

Mohamed was arrested by Interpol agents in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on December 23 last year.

He is charged alongside Ghalib Kara, Abdul Omar, Pravez Mohamed, Abdulmajeed Ibrahim and Fuji Motors with having 314 pieces of ivory.

The case proceeds on September 1
