Mum thought baby son was 'going to die' after choking on plastic in restaurant mashed potato

A nine-month-old baby choked on a piece of plastic which had been cooked into his mashed potato at a restaurant.

The shocked mother of Bobby Hughes said she thought he was “going to die” when he began gagging and struggled to breathe as the family ate at a Brewers Fayre restaurant in Ebbw Vale.

Kate Williams burst into tears as her partner began patting Bobby’s back – before a 50p-sized piece of plastic shot out of his mouth and onto the table, reports Wales Online .

The restaurant chain has said they are investigating “as a matter of priority”.

'He started coughing and choking'

Kate, from Merthyr Tydfil, said: “The gravy was quite hot so we were being careful. I was blowing on every spoonful to make sure it wasn’t going to burn his mouth.

“But halfway through he started coughing and choking.

“I was just standing there in blind panic. My mother-in-law was crying and everyone was staring. It was awful.”

The 25-year-old’s partner, Lloyd Hughes, 28, is a nurse and knew how to respond.

She said: “He got hold of Bobby and started doing chest thrusts and patting his back. He vomited and it was all coming out of his nose.

'This thing flew out onto the table'

“Then this thing flew out onto the table. It was a massive piece of plastic – it was bigger than the bottom of the spoon.

“I was blowing on each spoonful. I think it must have been crumpled up within the mash because it was huge – I would have seen it.

“I want them to change the way they handle food in the kitchen.

“I really thought Bobby was going to die. It was so lucky my partner was there.”

A spokesman for Brewers Fayre said: “We are aware of the complaint made by a customer in relation to their visit to the Ebbw Vale Brewers Fayre on Saturday, August 29, and have contacted the guest directly.

“We take the health and safety of our guests extremely seriously and are investigating the situation as a matter of priority.”
