The KSh500,000 water bill has accumulated since 2013 and efforts to have it paid appear to have hit the rocks.
Former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki owes a water company in Nyeri KSh500,000. The Othaya Mukurweini Water Company is now planning to disconnect water to Kibaki’s Othaya home if the debt is not settled.
“We approached Mr Kibaki a few years ago before he left office and he ordered State House to settle the amount. They only paid Sh200,000,” Mr Peter Ndirangu, the water firm’s internal auditor is quoted in the Business Daily.
Mr Ndirangu, who made the revelations while appearing before the Nyeri county assembly on Thursday, September 10, 2015, said that the former President was the single largest individual debtor. Other entities in the county owe the water company KSh108 million in water bills, which have accrued since 2013, with Chinga Girls said to owe the firm KSh5 million.
MP Kibaki’s spokesperson, Gituku Ngari, was quoted saying such matters are taken care of by the state in accordance with guidelines on the former President’s retirement benefits.
