Mugo wa Wairimu arrested, to be charged with rape, indecent assault

'Gynaecologist' Mugo wa Wairimu has been arrested and will appear in court on Friday over allegations that he raped a patient.

Head of Serious Crime Unit John Kariuki said Wairimu will answer to charges of rape and indecent assault.

Wairimu was arrested at a hotel in Limuru town, Kiambu county, on Thursday following a tip-off from the public.

He was apprehended over allegations that he raped a patient at his Prestige Healthcare centre in Githurai 44 and Zimmerman estates in Nairobi county.

Wairimu's arrest came after two members of the public noticed him waiting for a meal at Gitungo hotel, said Limuru OCPD Mohammed Bakuli.

Resident Wesly Njoroge said they called Limuru AP commander Michael Ndegwa, who went to the hotel with two officers, and interrogated Wairimu before taking him to the sub county police headquarters.

Saying he had spoken to the management, Bakuli clarified that Wairimu had not hired a room at the hotel.

Limuru police handed Wairimu over to the CID, who took him to their headquarters, where he recorded statements on the activities at his clinic.

By Thursday, four women had recorded statements on allegations of rape against Wairimu.

Kasarani police announced a search for Mugo last Sunday, after Citizen TV aired a clip of a man, said to be him, having sex with a seemingly unconscious patient.

Following the arrest, Wairimu wrote on Facebook that he was "unbowed", adding; "This is not a forum to defend myself. My lawyers doing their part (sic)."

DPP Keriako Tobiko and IG Joseph Boinnet ordered speedy investigations into the allegations against Wairimu, whom the Health ministry said is not a qualified doctor.

Boinnet further appealed to victims or anyone else with information to present it to the Kasarani police station for action.

The ministry shut down the Nairobi Prestige Healthcare facility on Wednesday and ordered the closure of its branches countrywide.

Wairimu will spend the night at Muthaiga police station; police denied his release on bond saying he would abscond.
