Pupil commits suicide after parents warn against love affair

A primary school pupil committed suicide on Wednesday evening after her parents warned her against a romantic relationship.

The girl was  a class eight pupil of Makwasinyi Primary School in Voi subcounty, Taita Taveta county.

Her body was found hanging from a tree near her home at about 6pm, said Taita Taveta police commander Richard Bitonga.

“The 16-year-old girl took her life after her parents warned her against the love affair with the boy," he said.

"The ongoing teachers' strike has given the students freedom to mingle with boys in villages. Parents have to be more vigilant."

Subcounty Education officer Kennedy Machora said Kasigau ward, where the school is based, has the highest number of early pregnancy cases in the county.

“The region has reported the highest number of girls who drop out because of early pregnancies. So far 12 girls have been impregnated by boys from schools in the area,” he said.
