A woman who burnt her husband with acid and pursued him to the hospital after learning he had not died was yesterday jailed for life.
Vernicia Ruguru, 36, was found guilty of splashing acid on her husband Patrick Njue, inflicting serious burns on his face and abdomen.
She committed the offence on July 16, 2012, in Kibugu village, Embu North.
A court heard that Ruguru followed Njue to the hospital, where he had been taken by neighbours.
Embu principal magistrate Robinson Oigara said she wanted to kill him.
The man was attacked as he rested on their matrimonial bed.
Oigara said the attack caused Njue great pain and deformed him, so a life imprisonment serves Ruguru right.
The court heard that on the material day, Ruguru woke up and prepared their children for school.
When she returned, she went on with her house chores.
Ruguru later walked to their bedroom as Njue lay on the bed and splashed the acid on him.
She then locked the door and escaped. Njue was rescued by the public after he switched on the alarm.
Oigara said the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Ruguru committed the offence.
The magistrate said evidence showed she followed her husband to the hospital in an attempt to kill him after learning the earlier attempt failed.
The court dismissed Ruguru’s defence, saying it was a fabrication.
The woman claimed she splashed the acid on her husband after he tried to splash it on her during a quarrel.
Oigara questioned how Njue could have done so while lying on his back on the bed.
He said if Ruguru’s story was to be believed, then she would have sustained some injuries.
The court gave Ruguru 14 days to appeal.
