My husband will be cleared of 'false' ICC charges - Rachel Ruto

Rachel Ruto has said she is confident her husband, Deputy President William Ruto, will be cleared of crimes against humanity charges at the ICC.

In her first public comment on the case, Rachel said her husband was falsely accused and will be cleared of all charges.

“Thank you and continue praying for us. It is not an easy thing especially if you know you are being accused falsely," she said.

“No sooner than we know, it is going to be behind us. We all know what happened that year, we were all there."

She spoke on Friday at Sosiot Girls Secondary School in Kericho county, during the 25th celebration of Africa Gospel Church National Women Conference, at which she was guest of honour.

Her remarks follow a decision by presiding judges for chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to admit recanted witness statements as evidence against the DP.

Ruto’s defence team appealed the decision saying use of the evidence, from witnesses who cannot be cross-examined, affects the fairness of proceedings.

But in her application, Bensouda that the statements will provide evidence on the DP's role in planning the 2007-2008 post-election violence.

Regarding the 30 per cent government tenders reserved for women, youth and people living with diability, Rachel appealed to MPs spouses to educate the beneficiaries

“Those who have taken advantage of this opportunity are doing well and some are already millionaires,” she said.

“I believe in education because some of us, without education, would not be where we are today."

Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony voiced his support for the two-thirds gender principle that seeks to increase the number of women in Parliament.

“We need more women to participate in leadership,” he said.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso and religious leaders also attended the function.
