Many of us know Ezekiel Kemboi, the top runner who has bagged gold at several world championship races, as a top athlete but few know that he is a police officer by day.
And not just any police officer, but one in the presidential escort.
President Uhuru Kenyatta shared this information while congratulating the sportsman on his gold win in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the 15th IAAF World Championships in Athletics held on Monday August 24, 2015 .
The president posted on Twitter:
Congratulations to one of my Presidential Escort officer, Ezekiel Kemboi and his entire 3,000m team for the clean sweep #MagicalKenya
A good number of Kenya’s world renown athletes are or were in the Police Service such as the legendary Kipchoge Keino and Richard Mateelong.
In March 2015, Inspector General Joseph Boinnet celebrated police officers for their service to the country both in security matters and on the running track locally and internationally.
After receiving trophies won by the National Police Service team that had participated in the Senior 8 and 12km marathon held at Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens on February 14, 2015 Boinnet said:
“I wish to commend all the officers who have continued to serve this country with commitment and dedication not only in their core business of providing security but also by participating in such activities and posting good results.”
