Uhuru asked to help release five Kenyans held in South Sudan

Supporters of five Kenyans detained in South Sudan marched in the Nairobi CBD on Thursday appealing for the state's intervention in their release.

Ravi Ghaghda, Peter Nkonge, Boniface Chuma, Anthony Wazome and Anthony Munialo were arrested on May 29 over fraud allegations.

A group of more than 80 marched from Uhuru Park to Kenyatta Avenue waving placards reading 'BringBackOurBoys' and 'Katiba day'.

The protesters, including family members, appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to talk to the country's officials about the release of the five.

"Our president went to South Sudan on Wednesday for a peace deal, we want him to talk to them to release our boys," a protester said.

"Today marks the fifth year since the promulgation of the constitution, we want the freedom of the boys to be guaranteed as stated in the constitution."

He said they want the government to help the families of the detainees have not  "been allowed access to them since the arrest and are really frustrated".

On July 29, Kenyan Ambassador to South Sudan Cleland Leshore said the five were arrested in Juba alongside a man in charge of Click Technologies, an ICT company they worked for.

They allegedly forged documents and used them to steal about $200 million from the Central Bank of Kenya and several other banks across the world, NTV reported.

"There are about 80 companies involved in the scam, it's not just the five Kenyans," Leshore said adding that among them are senior South Sudan government officials.

He said action is yet to be taken as; "This is a very big case. Many people are involved, many countries are involved so the investigation will take some time".

Leshore said investigations will be completed in three months and the charges either confirmed or dropped.

The Ambassador said the five are being held at South Sudan's National Intelligence Surveillance headquarters.

He said he has met them and that; "They have not been tortured in any way. They are eating well and they are also well kept".
