Mashemeji derby abandoned after crowd trouble

The much hyped Mashemeji derby pitting arch-rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards was abandoned prematurely due to crowd trouble at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The teams were tied at 0-0 until the 68th minute when Ingwe defender Jackson Saleh handled the ball inside the box to gift Gor Mahia a penalty but before Merddie Kagere could take the spot kick, angry AFC Leopards fans started hurling missiles onto the pitch.

Despite efforts by the Police to restore calm, the match commissioner Paul Kaunda had to call off the match as the stoppage went out of the allowed time and for fear of aggravating an otherwise tense situation.

Several Gor Mahia fans were arrested after they went into the Central Business District celebrating and encountered AFC fans where they pelted stones at each other forcing Police to use teargas.

At least 15 Gor fans were arrested and stones hidden in a paper bag recovered from one of them.

They have been taken to Central Police station for more interrogation.

The match final decision now rests on the shoulders of Independent Disciplinary and Appeals Committee (IDAC).
