Govt Denies Any Sugar Deal With Uganda

The government has for the past one week come under heavy criticism over an alleged sugar import agreement with Uganda in exchange for beef and milk products from Kenya with the opposition demanding for full disclosure of the alleged deal.

According to Adan Mohammed, acting agriculture cabinet secretary, the official government position is that no sugar deal was signed between Uganda and Kenya.

“The government wishes to clearly state that no trade agreement or any other deal was signed between Kenya and Uganda,” Adan is quoted by the Star Newspaper.

The government has been sending contradictory information regarding whether or not the deal was entered.

Uhuru Kenyatta is on record defending his move to sign a sugar importation deal with Uganda while accusing Raila Odinga of dragging politics into serious matters.

It is not however clear why the government has been sending contradictory messages regarding the deal which has resulted in politics taking center stage.
