Murang’a Man arrested for refusing to release Sh2.8 million baby surgery fund

The hope foundation NGO founder Alejandro Wanjau was arrested at ABC place Westlands on Thursday for allegedly refusing to release Sh2.8million for a baby's surgery overseas.
Wanjau was set up by Kenyans who had been part of the fundraising of Baby Fidelis Muthoni’s medical fund.

“Wanja Kinyanjui and I set a trap for him. We were to bail him out with Kshs.1M for him to urgently pay Baby Fidelis flight etc. To win his trust we asked him to change his sim card allegedly because detectives are on his case. We also asked him to use taxi to conceal identity. Wanja and I have paid taxi guy. We have recorded our conversation with him and he has admitted using the fund for other purposes. All the preparation has taken 2 days,” said Ndungu Nyoro.

He was taken to Muthangari police station, over the case, he was later picked up and booked to Kabete police station by the DCIO Dagoretti. Later, it emerged there was an arrest warrant against him enforced at Makuyu police station.

Baby Fidelis was due for surgery on Friday 21st but by Wednesday the family had not secured a visa to Canada.  According to the family a Canadian hospital had offered to treat her for free if they paid for her flight and six-month stay.

On Tuesday, Murang’a county police commander Naomi Ichami said Wanjau's three accounts which he used to raise funds for baby Fidelis had been blocked.

Wanjau, a close relative to the family had volunteered to conduct the funds drive but later withdrew the money without the family's knowledge.

“The paybill account number transcripts that we got from Safaricom indicated that Sh2.8 million had been deposited into the account and later withdrawn,” said Muthoni's father Kenneth Kinuthia.
