Kenha finalises plans to upgrade Mombasa road

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has completed plans for the upgrading of Nairobi’s Mombasa Road into a super highway.

According to Acting General Manager David Muchilwa the project which is expected to greatly decrease traffic congestion is scheduled to begin in December 2015.

“We had to find a better way of moving people along the highways and major Nairobi roads by a well-organised bus system using dedicated lanes. That’s why we came up with the Bus Rapid Transit which will be faster and efficient,” Muchilwa said. He said during the construction period, service lanes will receive first priority to ease the expected traffic congestion.

The massive project which is financed by the World Bank through the National Urban Transport Improvement Project will include construction of an interchange at the Nyayo Stadium roundabout.

It will have dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes in the middle from City Cabanas all the way to James Gichuru Road..

There will be bus stations 800 metres apart from each other with footbridges or underpasses for pedestrians.
