Pupil, 10, hangs self after quarrel with mother over homework

A 10-year-old class five pupil committed suicide by hanging last Sunday, after a quarrel with his mother over failure to complete his homework.

The mother of Andrew Kuria, of Karatina DEB Primary School in Mathira constituency, found his body hanging from a tree at at Rititi village, Nyeri county.

Christine Wambui said the boy's homework, that was to be completed before schools reopen on Monday, was halfway done.

His grandmother, Ann Muthoni, said Kuria, who was an altar boy, used a sisal rope to hang himself.

Headteacher Vincent Mwangi said the boy had threatened to kill himself earlier this year, but was counselled by a teacher.

He said the student had not shown any signs of stress before leaving school for the holidays.

''This particular boy had no issues of indiscipline, in fact he had improved and we expected him to perform well and achieve his goal of being a pilot," Mwangi said.

Mathira West OCPD David Kemboi said investigations into the incident were launched.

The body was taken to Karatina hospital morgue.
