Ruto’s ICC Case Now Wake Up Call, Rift Valley Politicians To Unveil Strategy

Politicians from Rift Valley region are now calling for an emergency meeting to discuss the cases of Deputy President William Ruto and Joshua Arap Sang, the former radio journalist at the International Criminal Court (ICC)

Ruto and Sang suffered a major blow when ICC judges allowed Fatou Bensouda, the chief prosecutor of ICC  to use recanted evidence.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s case was dropped for lack of evidence. Politicians from the voter rich region the Rift Valley now wants to ensure ‘one of their own is also set free.’

It is reported that Rift Valley politicians will decide whether Ruto should cease cooperating with the Hague based court.

Kipchumba Murkomen, the senator of Elgeyo Marakwet is organising the meeting.

“What is happening in the ICC is no longer justice but politics. Why did the ICC allow the use of recanted testimony from previous witnesses against Ruto and Sang? This is unacceptable,” Murkomen is quoted by the Star.

Late August, 2015 politicians led by Ferdinand Waititu, the MP of Kabate, Cecil Mbarire, the MP of Runyenjes, Sara Korere, nominated MP, Kembi Gitura, the senator of Murang’a county and Soipan Tuya, the woman representative of Murang’a county condemned the ICC for ruling in favour of Bensouda to allow use of primary evidence against the two.

Waituti advised Ruto to stop attending the hearings.

Ruto and Sang are facing criminal cases for allegedly orchestrating the 2007/2008 post elections violence. Close to 1,200 people were killed while thousands were left homeless with property worth millions of shillings lost during the violence.
