Uhuru replaces Grace Kaindi with Joel Kitili as Deputy IG

President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated GSU Commandant Joel Kitili as the new acting Deputy Inspector General of Police.

"Kitili's nomination will take place with immediate effect, and until the substantive process of appointing the next DIG takes place," Uhuru said.

In a statement to newsrooms on Tuesday, he appointed Kitili's predecessor, Grace Kaindi, as Ambassador of Kenya.

This, he said, will ensure smooth transition and the continuation of reforms in the National Police Service.

In June, the NPC had said 60-year-old Kaindi would serve until January 2018.

In a letter to IG Joseph Boinett, chairman Johnstone Kavuludi had cancelled intial directions for Kaindi to go on leave pending retirement.

The commission had written to Kaindi in December 2014 asking her to prepare for three months' leave in July.

Kavuludi said she was a constitutional office holder appointed to serve a five-year term and is eligible for a one-year extension in consideration of age.

Uhuru further appointed Ambassador Martin Kimani as the Director of the National Counter Terrorism Centre.

He said this was in line with efforts to "consolidate the government’s efforts to combat terrorism and counter violent extremism".

Isaac Ochieng was also appointed Ambassador of Kenya.
